Like Tamara, Ian also comes from an extremely musical family. His mom studied voice at St. Olaf and the University of Michigan. His dad, an insurance attorney, played the trumpet and has been a singer throughout his life. Both have enjoyed singing semi-professionally and on worship teams/in church choirs for many years. Ian has wonderful memories of listening to his mom teach voice at home and of attending shows at Drury Lane Theatre, which very much ignited his passion for theatre.
The family requirement was that everyone play piano until they could sightread a hymn. Ian began taking piano lessons in first grade and French horn lessons in fourth grade. Throughout middle school and high school he was an instrumentalist first, playing in the IMEA District 1 Orchestra, being a Drum Major of the marching band, and receiving a coveted senior solo. Ian also danced competitively for six years, winning numerous awards and accolades, especially when it came to his favorite style of dance: TAP. He did not begin singing regularly until college. There he sang with the Moody Men's Collegiate Choir, traveling all over the country, to Hong Kong, China, Greece, and Cyprus, and serving as its president for two years.
Ian received his BA (Bible Major) from Moody Bible Institute and his MA (Music and Worship) from Liberty University. He spent eleven years in full-time pastoral ministry, serving churches in Chicago, Indianapolis, and Denver, before shifting to a career in performing. He loved his time in ministry, especially working with worship teams on main stage and young people in student ministry. He is thoroughly enjoying a return to the stage and is thankful his current career path allows him to be involved with the next generation of singers and performers.
Ian combines his love of the arts with his passion for working with young people. Seeing his students succeed is the best part of teaching. His students have seen much success of late, from leads in high school musical productions to first place rankings in show choir solo comps.
Ian has performed all over the country, including locally
with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Recent productions include theaters in Denver, San Diego, Columbus, GA, and Long Island, NY.
I wanted to reach out and say thank you. Seeing you interact with your vocal students Thursday and Friday night made this mama's heart happy. It was interesting to see how someone who lives so many miles away can feed into kids over video. I appreciate you being a positive example, being encouraging and helping them to grow not only in the vocal area, but in life. You take an interest in what they are doing and ask about it or even show up when you can! It was really nice to see how much they think of you and that connection that you have made.
Working with Ian truly was a game-changing experience! Not only was he super helpful in his ways of growing my vocal technique, he makes an effort to create a personal relationship with his students that can't be beat. Every lesson was spectacular and productive while also full of laughs. I'd recommend Ian to anyone and everyone, as he truly cannot be beat!
Ian is a phenomenal vocal instructor who has worked with two of my kids for quite some time now! I've witnessed remarkable growth in their singing abilities. He's incredibly versatile, working with both male and female voices, merging acting skills with singing technique. His guidance helped my daughter secure a spot in a highly selective theatre troupe, and my son recently excelled as the lead in his high school musical, impressing audience with his singing and acting skills thanks to help form Ian. Ian is down to earth, supportive, and knows his stuff, making him an excellent choice for anyone looking to hire a vocal coach.
